“I’m sorry”
Thirteen Reasons Why“I’m sorry” is both a phrase of intimate regret and the final words Hannah Baker leaves on her recordings. First spoken by Clay Jensen to Hannah during a tender moment, it returns at the end of her account in a form Clay cannot answer; its repetition binds his remorse to the last words he will hear from her.
The First Apology
While Hannah describes lying with Clay on a bed, holding him close and wanting more, Clay whispers, “I’m so sorry.” He feels happiness that they have reached this closeness together and sadness that it took him so long. Hannah experiences their kisses as a possible beginning again, but the moment also calls up memories of her first kiss with Justin Foley and how he ruined it. She tells Clay to stop and pushes him away. The apology therefore falls within a scene where affection and painful memory coexist: Clay’s words register his own conflicted feeling, while Hannah’s sudden withdrawal shows that their closeness cannot simply erase what has come before.
A Phrase Repeated at the End
At the conclusion of the tapes, Hannah says, “And I’m sorry.” The recorder clicks off, leaving Clay with no further words from her. Pressing his face against the bars at the park, he begins to cry and recognizes that these are the last words he will ever hear from Hannah. The apology is not followed by explanation or reply; its force comes partly from the abrupt stop that makes it final.
Clay’s Grief and the Phrase’s Afterlife
Clay repeats the words to himself—“I’m sorry”—and says that whenever anyone apologizes, he will think of Hannah. The phrase thus becomes a lasting trigger for memory rather than a completed exchange between the two. His wish that Hannah had let him help, and his insistence that he wanted her alive, stand beside the apology as expressions of grief and helplessness. He also recognizes that some listeners may be too angry with Hannah for her suicide and for blaming others to say the words back. The ending leaves the apology suspended between regret, love, and the response Clay can no longer give.
